Irrigation Requirements
- Irrigation is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- During daylight saving time (second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November) irrigation is limited to no more than two days per week on scheduled days. Residential irrigation is allowed on Wednesday and Saturday at addresses that end in an odd number or have no address.Residential irrigation is allowed on Thursday and Sunday at addresses that end in an even number. Nonresidential irrigation is allowed on Tuesday and Friday.
- During Eastern Standard Time (first Sunday in November until the second Sunday in March) irrigation is limited to no more than one day per week on scheduled days.
Residential irrigation is allowed on Saturday at addresses that end in an odd number or have no address.Residential irrigation is allowed on Sunday at addresses that end in an even number. Nonresidential irrigation is allowed on Tuesday. - High and medium volume irrigation (sprays and rotors) areas must not exceed 75% of the landscaped area or cover no more than ½ acre on single-family residential lots (whichever is less). Low volume irrigation areas may be utilized in lieu of any high or medium volume irrigation area.
- Low volume irrigation is required for all trees, shrubs, and ground cover beds. The City may waive this requirement if special circumstances exist.
- No less than 25% of the landscaped area must consist of low volume irrigation or no irrigation (in natural areas).
- Low volume irrigation zones must have a pressure regulator and filter with a mesh smaller than the emitter openings.
- Irrigation systems must be designed and installed at a pressure of 40 psi.
- A rain sensing device is required on all irrigation systems and be set to override the irrigation cycle when half an inch of rainfall or less has occurred. Rain sensors must be placed where it is exposed to unobstructed natural rainfall.
- The use of irrigation risers are prohibited.
- Spray heads and rotors are not to be mixed in the same zone.
- Irrigation zones must be divided according to: available flow rate, vegetation grouping (i.e. plants and turf separated, different turf types separated), sprinkler types (i.e. sprinklers with matching precipitation rates, and soil characteristics).
- There must be a minimum separation of 4 inches between distribution equipment and pavement.
- There must be a minimum separation of 12 - 24 inches between distribution equipment and buildings or other vertical structures.
- Narrow areas, 4 feet or less, are not to be irrigated unless low volume/micro-irrigation is used.
- Low volume irrigation is required for all trees, shrubs, and ground cover beds. The City may waive this requirement is special circumstances exist. *Trees must be on a low volume zone (with plant zone or on a separate designated zone).
- No direct sprays onto walkways, buildings, roadways, and drives.
- Rotors and sprays in turf areas must be spaced to provide proper head to head coverage.
- A maintenance checklist must be provided to the property owner by the irrigation contractor and include a recommended maintenance schedule, proper irrigation system settings according to season, recommendations for checking the rain sensor device, filter cleaning recommendations and information on the current water restrictions within the City.
- Upon completion, a tag or sticker must be affixed to the timer box. The tag/sticker must include the permit number (for non-residential), a copy of the landscape and irrigation certification checklist, date installed, number of zones, and installer's name.
- A valid permit must be obtained from the City prior to installation, expansion, or modification for all development except for individual single-family residential homes.
- Prior to the issuance of a permit for construction of a new non-residential building, common area, or the substantial alteration of a non-residential building or site, an irrigation plan (when required) shall be submitted and approved by the City.
