Lightning Prediction System

Thor Guard Lightning Prediction Systems

The City of Apopka currently utilizes Thor Guard Lightning Prediction Systems for our facilities. These systems are installed at the following facilities:
Lightning detection device on a pole.

System Information

Since 1976 Thor Guard systems have reliably and accurately provided advance warning of the potential for lightning strikes. In a developing storm, the unique prediction
technology evaluates the dynamics of the electrical energy within the atmosphere and will automatically provide timely warning alerts.

Numerous City and County governments are installing these warning systems for safer operations at the following:
  • Ballparks
  • Other Recreation Facilities
  • Parks
  • Pools
  • Schools
  • Soccer Fields

System Process

The City of Apopka recognizes that keeping our participants and park patrons safe is our number one priority. The system will work as follows:
  1. When lightning is detected in the area you will be warned with one, 15 second blast of a horn signaling suspension of all activities. All park patrons are required to seek safe shelter immediately! Open pavilion areas are not considered a safe shelter.
  2. A strobe light will begin flashing and remain flashing until safe conditions return.
  3. You may resume activities only after three 5 second blasts of the horn are sounded and the strobe light stops flashing.
